Karlskoga Folk High School
- an introduction
Karlskoga Folk High School is a college for adults. Folk high schools are a special kind of schools
launched in the middle of the nineteenth century and located to the Nordic countries. They offer education
to adults. The admittance age is usually eighteen. The schools give a wide range of courses, nowadays also
vocational education. Popular movements and NGOs mostly run them, sometimes county councils.
The Swedish Covenant Church runs Karlskoga Folk High School. Every year approximately 220 students from
all over Sweden, and from about 15 other countries, come to our school to attend our courses. Some live
nearby and commute every day; 80 students stay in the school accommodation, where each room has got a
private bath.
Karlskoga Folk High School provides a meeting place where diverse views, values, and philosophies of life
may be tested in a free and open exchange. The school wants to create an open and supportive atmosphere and
a social community where drinking and drugs are not accepted.
Beside the regular classes the school offers various other activities, such as social evenings, culture
programs (theatre, concerts, lectures), arts and crafts work and sports.
